Hey big spender!
Exactly one week ago, I was given tickets to see the press opening of the Philippine version of the Tony Award winning musical, Sweet Charity. It opened officially on August 5, 2011, but I was fortunate enough to watch it on the 4th. I was very reluctant at first, because I knew I still had a lot to study for my UPCAT two days after, but I went anyway.
Sweet Charity is a 9WorksTheatrical production which stars Nikki Gil as Charity Hope Valentine, a funny and bubbly hopeless romantic who falls in love way too many times. She works as a dance hall hostess (an old fancy term for bar dancer). Other familiar faces include Ciara Sotto, Sheree Bautista (she played Mimi when I watched Rent), Kris Lawrence and OJ Mariano (he played Collins when I watched Rent).
The story revolves around Charity and her quest for a better life and love. I won’t say much about it here since I want you to go out and see it for yourselves, but all I can say is that I’m very happy I decided to go watch it. The songs were amazing, and Nikki Gil was a big shocker! I was never given the chance to see her perform live since I missed out on Legally Blonde: The Musical, but seeing her perform was like a dream. I’m sure she’d win a Tony for that performance (or a Filipino version of one). She really played Charity flawlessly and I started to believe that she WAS Charity Hope Valentine, and not just a stage actress who played her.
Another shocker for me that night was Kris Lawrence. He plays Oscar Lindquist, a neurotic, claustrophobic, nerd-type boy, who Charity meets in an elevator. It was amazing to see how he transformed himself from an R&B singer in Party Pilipinas to a neurotic, awkward…really awkward, erratic man.
Seated behind me was Iya Villania and I could hear how shocked and amazed she was at how well Kris was able to portray Oscar.
The songs were sung very well and they had amazing chemistry with one another. The most important thing I learned from this musical, is that you can change your life if you really wanted to as long as you believe in yourself and you don’t let anything stand in the way of your dreams. Watching Sweet Charity gave me the boost I needed for the UPCAT because I learned that I’m the bravest individual I have ever met.

Sweet Charity runs from August 5-27, at the Carlos P. Romulo Theatre in RCBC Plaza.
